Me love you long time - in search of a great Chinese takeaway

June 26, 2006

I apologise for the sheer un-Pc’ness of the title. Come on, it’s funny! It was a toss up between that and the “Me so solly!!” line from Krusty the Clown. Flapping dickie anyone?

So everytime we want to order in Stephen votes for Chinese and he is always immediately veto’ed. Not because I don’t like Chinese but because we simply haven’t found a really awesome Chinese takeaway yet. I would constantly argue that my old Chinese in Belfast rocked the house and was far superior to any that I’ve had here in England and Stephen would constantly argue back that they’re pretty much all the same. Well. We went to Belfast a couple of weeks ago and after a few drinks at the pub we went back, ordered a Chinese (although not from my beloved Emerald City as they heard rumours of “hygiene issues”) and it was just. so. lovely. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence, I know that there are really good Chinese places here in Brighton, I just have no idea where or who they are. I don’t mean posh Chinese either, although I’ll be reviewing some of that soon since I have my FOF voucher for Gars down in the old lanes.

What I need are your suggestions so that I can finally say to Stephen, “Yes. Yes we can order that Chinese tonight.”

Eating out on the cheap - any nominations?

June 23, 2006

Basically, what I’m after are some places that are good for a meal that’s none too pricey but also none too gross. I like those 2 and 3 course menus but most of the time they turn out to be so very below average. So I never go to these places. I need you, my readers, to let me know where it is you all go when you want to dine out but it’s about 2 days from payday and you’re just a tad bit skint. We’ve already mentioned Pokeno Pies and Carluccio’s. Anywhere else? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Meh.

June 20, 2006

I have loads of stuff in the pipeline but Blogger isn’t letting me upload pictures from my camera for some reason. Currently in the pipeline are:

Bodega d’Tapa - wee place on Church Street
Gourmet Burger Kitchen - mmm….burrrrrgers
UPSD #2: Ha Ha! Bar & Canteen - my first redemption of an Argus FOF voucher
Sejuice - another juice bar? Ah, but THIS one has pin-up girls and a Pussy Galore smoothie!
UPSD #3: The Cricketers - the oldest (and most velvety) pub in Brighton

Muchos gracias for all of your patience. Hopefully Internet Explorer and Blogger will learn to make nice very very soon.

Oh, and if anyone can tell me how to manipulate the dates on Blogger so that I can have them in the order they’re actually published instead of drafted, I’d be ever so grateful.

The Ultimate Pub Sunday Dinner - let the search commence!

April 27, 2006

I really do love the Sunday Dinner. The Roast Dinner. The Pub Lunch. Call it what you will, I know that Sunday (being the Sabbath for us Gentiles) is a day meant for relaxation, reflection and doing as little as humanly possible. A day of gently paging through the papers, for tackling the super Sudoku puzzle that you can never EVER seem to finish even though you’ve invested HOURS of your life into completing it. I feel as though I haven’t really taken full advantage of this great British tradition and so I will be touring the pubs in search of what will indeed be, the Ultimate Pub Sunday Dinner. It will be based on taste (obviously), cost and general pub atmosphere. Is there a non-smoking section? A garden? How good is the nut roast? Howabout the music?

Please leave suggestions. I figure I’ll start on my doorstep and work my through the North Laine but I also read today that Brighton has more watering holes per capita than any other city in EUROPE. So I could use a bit of guidance if I’m to finish this little project before I’m collecting my state pension.

Watch this space for: The George, Trafalgar Street
