The Ultimate Pub Sunday Dinner - let the search commence!

April 27, 2006

I really do love the Sunday Dinner. The Roast Dinner. The Pub Lunch. Call it what you will, I know that Sunday (being the Sabbath for us Gentiles) is a day meant for relaxation, reflection and doing as little as humanly possible. A day of gently paging through the papers, for tackling the super Sudoku puzzle that you can never EVER seem to finish even though you’ve invested HOURS of your life into completing it. I feel as though I haven’t really taken full advantage of this great British tradition and so I will be touring the pubs in search of what will indeed be, the Ultimate Pub Sunday Dinner. It will be based on taste (obviously), cost and general pub atmosphere. Is there a non-smoking section? A garden? How good is the nut roast? Howabout the music?

Please leave suggestions. I figure I’ll start on my doorstep and work my through the North Laine but I also read today that Brighton has more watering holes per capita than any other city in EUROPE. So I could use a bit of guidance if I’m to finish this little project before I’m collecting my state pension.

Watch this space for: The George, Trafalgar Street

The George is a great place to start; then how about the Basketmakers? If you can bear to leave the North Laine, try the Prestonville, the Round Georges (Sutherland Street) and the Barley Mow (Kemp Town). Mmmm!

Oh, the Barley Mow is unbeatable in winter - open fire, traditional pub, pint of ale…sigh. And the portions are huge! I also love the Hop Poles on Middle St if you can get in the door! Good in summer as it has outside space.

I was in Shoreham on Sunday on a bike ride and popped into The Marlipins, quite at random. They had a Sunday lunch on the menu ‘with a choice of meats’ but the landlord kindly organised a meatless version for me (but sadly no discount) comprising an overflowing plate of roast spuds, 2 Yorkshire puddings (not home made), cabbage, carrots and broccoli (nice and not overcooked at all), an obscene looking stuffing ball, etc. He also informed me that the gravy was meat-based, so I opted out and opted in some sachets of brown sauce. A bit dry, but I polished it off. £6.50 I think. A fine selection of Real ales too.

In Brighton, The George is always first choice — the Shakespeare’s Head used to do a choice of two nut roasts, but that was a while back!

Maybe we should have a sidebar search: Best Veggie Roast in Brighton. The George’s Sunday menu is always fab but I was a bit disappointed in my burnt roasted potatoes. Pics to come!

Hi Amanda. Fred’s blog pointed me in your direction.
An excellent place to try is the Cooper’s Cask on Farm Road, Hove. Alright, alright, I know it’s a bit of a trek, but I promise you you won’t be disappointed by the gorgeous grub - especially the free pudding. Yum.

PS Tried Strada on your recommendation. Very impressed. I went for the Manzo pizza. Anyone who serves wafer-thin beef fillet on a pizza is cool by me.
